When Leon Eric “Kix” Brooks III and Ronnie Gene Dunn came together in 1990 to form Brooks & Dunn, they had no idea that they would become one of the most powerful duos in country music history. With a long line of No.1 hits and CMA’s favorite vocal duo almost every year since 1992, Brooks & Dunn mixes just the right elements of personality and style that keep fans wanting more.

Kix was born in Shreveport, Louisiana where he grew up with a love for music. He ended up working the club circuits in Alaska and Maine, while also working for oil pipeline and advertising companies, before trying his luck in Nashville in the late 1970s. Kix then worked as a staff songwriter while practicing his singing. Ronnie, on the other hand grew up in Coleman, Texas where he studied theology at a Christian college before moving to Oklahoma. In Tulsa, Ronnie became the front man of a band and played at the popular club, Duke’s Country. He won a talent contest sponsored by Marlboro that promised a potential recording contract, but unfortunately things didn’t work out in his favor. Later, when Ronnie tried Nashville again in 1990, he was paired up with Kix and the two became Brooks & Dunn.

With Kix as the main vocalist and Ronnie heading the guitar, Brooks & Dunn released their debut single, “Brand New Man,” in 1991. The single soared to the top of the charts and made the No. 1 spot. Their next singles, “My Next Broken Heart,” “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” and “Neon Moon,” followed the same example and made the debut album, Brand New Man, a multiplatinum success. More No.1 hits followed, like “She’s Not the Cheatin’ Kind” and “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone.” Brooks & Dunn continued their hit steak throughout the 1990’s mostly with songs they wrote themselves; but in 1996, Brooks & Dunn struck gold with their remake of “My Maria” which stayed at the top of the charts for weeks in addition to winning them the CMA Entertainer of the Year Award.

The duo joined Reba McEntire in 1998 for their next chart topping single, “If You See Him/If You See Her,” and the three hit the road to tour together. Brooks & Dunn then released their 1999 album, Tight Rope. This album was not as successful as their previous ones, but they recovered greatly a few years later with “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” which spent nearly two months at the No.1 spot. A little later in 2001, just after the September 11th terrorist attacks, Brooks & Dunn released the single “Only in America.”

In 2003, Red Dirt Road was released and the title track not only joined Brooks & Dunn’s list of No.1 hits, but also won a Grammy nomination. By 2004, it was time for the duo to release their second Greatest Hits album and their song, “It’s Getting Better All the Time” also found its way to the top of the charts. “Play Something Country” and “Believe” from their next album, Hillbilly Deluxe, were Brooks & Dunn’s popular hits in 2005.

After winning several CMA Awards and nominations since the beginning, Brooks & Dunn have hosted the award show in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Ronnie’s most recent work has been with fellow country music star, Keith Urban; the two recorded a duet, “Raise the Barn,” on Keith’s latest album, Love, Pain, and the Whole Crazy Thing.

Country's top duo and country music legend Alan Jackson hit the road this summer for their 2007 tour.
