Billy Currington, born on November 19, 1973, was raised in Rincon, Georgia. His mother married Larry Currington when Billy was a just year and a half old. Growing up, Billy saw his problems with alcohol and even wrote the chorus to one of his later hits, “Walk a Little Straighter,” at the age of twelve. Despite Larry’s alcohol abuse, he introduced country music to Billy, which initiated his love of music.
That love of music later developed into a love of singing and throughout high school, Billy grew as a singer. During his junior year in high school, a visit to a friend’s church set Billy on the right track to a singing career. He spoke with the preacher of his love of the church’s blend of country and gospel music. After inviting Billy to sing at the church the next Sunday, the preacher took him to audition at the Opryland USA theme park. Although he was not accepted at the park, Billy was excited to return to Nashville after his senior year to pursue his dream.
Billy worked in a paper plant for a short time before he decided to move to Nashville. Despite his motivation, Billy stayed in Nashville for less than a year and moved back in with his grandmother. There, he joined a local band and played at the Cavalier Lounge for eight months until he gave Nashville another try.
He found a job with a concrete company working sixteen hours during six days of the week and played in clubs when he had the time. When his friends advised him to take a part-time job and focus on his songwriting and singing, Billy began work as a personal trainer. One day he noticed a gym client wearing a BMI hat and the two started talking. Soon, Billy had an audition with the company.
After a few demo tapes, Billy was signed as a full-time songwriter. Unfortunately, only one song was cut, and he lost a deal with a record company, and his contract was not renewed. However, things started to look up when Billy ran into Carson Chamberlain, the producer for country singer, Mark Wills who wanted to sing a song Billy had co-written. Carson invited Billy to write songs and record demos together. He later took the demos to Luke Lewis of Mercury Records and Billy was soon signed to the company.
In 2003, Billy released his debuted single, “Walk a Little Straighter,” about a young boy who sees his father’s alcohol problems and promises to never be that kind of father. His first album, Billy Currington, was released the same year. The next year, Billy recorded “Party for Two,” with Shania Twain for her Greatest Hits album. Billy’s second album, Doin’ Somethin’ Right, was released in 2005 and the hit, “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” reached the #2 spot on the US Country chart and the #11 on the US chart.
His latest single, "Good Directions" is currently climbing the country music charts. |
