The story of Montgomery Gentry is best described by the music they play. According to Eddie Montgomery this would be a life of “the good, the bad, the ugly, and the party on the weekends.” With a true-to-life representation of the working man, love, and loss, Montgomery Gentry has met their goal of reaching as many Americans as possible and truly speaking to their fans.

Both Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry grew up with a love for country music. Throughout their teenage years and into adulthood, each one joined bands and played their own local club scene. When the Kentucky natives first joined their musical forces, they played together with Eddie’s brother John Michael Montgomery in a band called Early Tymz. This led to a new band, Young Country, with John as the front man. When John left the group to take a chance at a solo career, Troy also decided to entertain this dream. After winning the 1994 Jim Beam National Talent Contest, Troy played the opening slots for popular artists such as Patty Loveless, John (who had since been very successful), and Tracy Byrd. After these short moments of fame, however, Troy could not land a record contract and it was no surprise that Eddie and Troy rejoined to form their duo, Deuce.

Although the name, which has since changed to Montgomery Gentry, didn’t last long, the talented twosome did, landing a record deal with Columbia Records. They released their debut album, Tattoos & Scars, in 1999. Right away Montgomery Gentry struck success as their singles, “Hillbilly Shoes” and “Daddy Won’t Sell the Farm,” made it to the Top Ten list. “Lonely and Gone” made an even bigger impression on critics and the public as it went all the way to the Top Five list. Continuing their success streak, Montgomery Gentry won the CMA Duo of the Year award in 2000, an award that Brooks & Dunn had won for the past eight years.

Their second album, Carrying On, followed suit as it climbed to the Top Ten list in 2001. “She Couldn’t Change Me” became a popular song and made it to the No. 2 spot on the charts. With the next album, My Town, Montgomery Gentry added “My Town,” “Speed,” and “Hell Yeah” to their list of hits. It was not until their next album was released, however, that the duo released a No.1 hit. “If You Ever Stop Loving Me” from the 2004 album, You Do Your Thing, finally made it to the very top. In addition, this album introduced “Gone” and “Something To Be Proud Of” which was also a No.1 hit.

With their quick success and list of hits, Montgomery Gentry released their greatest-hits collection, Something to Be Proud Of: The Best of 1999-2005, followed by their most recent album, Some People Change in 2006. Recently, Montgomery Gentry has been featured on several television and radio programs including the Oprah & Friends radio show and the Wheel of Fortune.
