At a time when the lives of three musicians seemed to be headed in a dark direction, their music brought them together and the result was Sugarland. Three years after their first meeting, despite many obstacles including losing a member, Sugarland is determined to reach their dreams and the hearts of country music fans everywhere.

Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush, and former Sugarland member Kristen Hall were all headed in their own musical direction before joining together in 2004. Jennifer, born in Douglas, Georgia, was working in clubs around Atlanta with her bands, Soul Miner’s Daughter and later the Jennifer Nettles Band, singing in her country twang style night after night. Kristian, already with a record label deal, found himself playing folk-rock music as part of the duo, Billy Pilgrim. Kristen, too, was already a successful musician with two solo albums to her name. Despite the different musical paths, the one thing these three had in common was the need for change.

The idea to join together was first considered when Kristen called Kristian to make plans to write songs together. Realizing their creative genius, the two began to truly consider becoming a group. With Kristen tired of singing the same heartbreaking songs every night and Kristian fed up with Billy Pilgrim, the thought of traveling a new road was very appealing. They soon told Jennifer their ideas with the hope of her becoming their lead singer and, just as they were, she was relieved to leave her tired routine and jump into something new. With that, Sugarland was born. The three decided from the start to leave the club performing life behind them and aim for star status. Fortunately for these musicians, this was not a goal out of their reach.

After their first gig together, Sugarland was a roaring success and a few gigs down the road they were performing sold out concerts to audiences of more than 1,000 fans. It only took a few months for the group to be offered a contract with Mercury Records and soon after that, in October, their first album was released. Twice the Speed of Life was a huge success with major hits “Something More,” “Down in Mississippi (Up To No Good),” and “Baby Girl.” Sugarland's popularity expanded so quickly that in just a few months they were not only nominated for a Grammy award but many CMA awards as well. Since the release of their album, it has sold more that two million copies.

Unfortunately, by the beginning of 2006, Sugarland had broken as quickly as it had found success. Kristen decided to leave the group to live a simpler life at home writing songs. Despite this set back, Jennifer and Kristian did not give up their dreams and continued on as Sugarland.

Their first hit after Kristen left was a song she had written for them before she parted ways: “Just Might Make Me Believe.” Along with the success of that song, Jennifer also made a hit out of her duet with Bon Jovi, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” and Sugarland’s presence in the music business was as strong as ever.

In November of 2006, Sugarland released their second album, Enjoy the Ride. The single, “Want To,” was well-received in when it was first released (prior to the release of Enjoy the Ride) and reached the No.3 spot on the country singles charts.
