Lee Ann Womack has loved listening to and singing country music her entire life. Now, with millions of albums sold and a many hit songs, Lee Ann has worked her way to the top of not only the charts but the country music scene.

Lee Ann was born on August 19, 1966 in Jacksonville , Texas. Her father, a disk jockey, introduced the young girl to the many country artists, including Bob Wills and Dolly Parton, that would influence her own music. After high school, Lee Ann attended South Plains Junior College in Levelland , Texas and studied music. Here, she joined the school band, Country Caravan and toured the Southwest. Lee Ann later decided to study music business at Nashville’s Belmont University. While at Belmont, she met and later married songwriter Jason Sellers. Shortly after the birth of their daughter just a few years later, the couple filed for divorce.

Lee Ann began singing demos for songwriters and even writing her own songs after she left Belmont. In 1995, Lee Ann was signed to Tree Publishing and in 1996, she was signed as an artist to Decca Records. With the next year came her first single, “Never Again, Again,” which made it to No. 22 on the country music charts. Lee Ann became more successful with other singles, especially with the help of artists like George Strait and Alan Jackson. Her second album, Some Things I Know, contained the No.2 hit, “A Little Past Little Rock.” She racked up four singles at the No.2 spot on the charts before she moved from Decca to MCA Nashville.

The switch to a new record company was not the only change during this time of Lee Ann’s life; in 1999, she married Frank Liddell and had another daughter. Her two children joined her in the music video for her No.1 hit, “I Hope You Dance” in 2000. The song became extremely popular and remains her biggest hit to date. After five weeks at No.1, the single crossed over and made the pop and adult contemporary charts. The following year, “I Hope You Dance” won CMA’s Single of the Year Award and Lee Ann also won the Female Vocalist of the Year Award.

Lee Ann released another album in 2002, Something Worth Leaving Behind. Although the album had little success, her hit, “Mendocino County Line” with Willie Nelson, was awarded a CMA and a Grammy award, returning her to her place in the country music scene. In 2005, Lee Ann released her sixth album, There’s More Where That Came From, with the hit, “I May Hate Myself In The Morning.”
